>> why is it just me? >> it may not be. ♪ we're turning to serious news. a stunning overnight rescue in florida. a man pulled from the rubble, hours after a deadly parking garage collapse. abc's matt gutman is in miami with the very latest. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning, amy. we've learned just a couple of hours ago this has shifted from a search mission to a recovery mission. officials here tell us that that lone person they thought still trapped in that rubble may have died. >> we feel at this time, the chances of survival of anyone still left in that debris is minimal. we never want to give up. we never want to end the search. but at this time, we are moving forward with a recovery operation. >> reporter: there's still one person missing, robert buhdoo, an electrical contractor, whose

family says hours later, he has still not answered his phone. >> he's the best dad in the world. we need you guys to find him, please. >> we got people. >> reporter: hours earlier wednesday, firefighters squeezed between steel beams to save this man, who had also been pinned. >> my leg, my leg, take care of my leg! >> okay. okay. >> reporter: police say at least 12 contractors were working on the new garage at miami-dade college when it collapsed around noon wednesday. >> i was able to see the last floor just crumble down. and i saw smoke coming up. and people just running around. >> reporter: two bodies have now been recovered. and seven survivors hospitalized. as robert's family waits and prays. >> we need prayers because i believe in miracles. i believe in miracles. >> reporter: and that miraculous rescue you just saw, the man whose legs were amputated to save his life, we're being told he may not survive. and now begins the grim task for rescuers to comb through the

rest of that rubble for any bodies. amy? >> what an incredibly sad story. matt gutman, thanks so much. let's turn to josh elliott for the morning's other top headlines. josh? >> we're going to get to the breaking news out of colorado. a body found in the desperate search for missing 10-year-old jessica ridgeway. abc's clayton sandell has been on this case from the start. joins us, now, from westminster, colorado. good morning to you, clayton. >> reporter: good morning to you, josh. right now, police are on the scene where that body was found. and overnight, several law enforcement sources tell us they believe it is the the body of jessica ridgeway, missing for nearly a week. the gruesome scene found overnight, just off this roadside, in a remote arvada, colorado, park. >> this afternoon, a body was discovered. >> reporter: investigators worked under the floodlights of a fire truck. finally carrying the body out around 9:00 p.m. >> the arvada police department and the westminster police department are working jointly with additional resources to process that crime scene. >> reporter: police haven't

officially identified the body. but sources tell abc news, it is the missing 10-year-old. earlier wednesday, police announced jessica's parents are not suspects in her disappearance. >> the focus shifts to an unknown suspect, as we think that she was abducted. >> you don't want any -- any parent -- any parent to -- to ever experience this in their whole entire life. >> reporter: the body was found about seven miles from jessica's home in westminster, colorado, and about seven miles from the town of superior, where her backpack and water bottle were found sunday, left on a sidewalk. the fifth grader vanished friday morning as she walked to school. dozens of officers saturated jessica's neighborhood again wednesday. overnight, they learned they were too late. we hope to learn more from police today. investigators tell me their number one priority now is identifying a suspect, josh? >> clayton sandell, in westminster, colorado. thank you for that. meanwhile, another

developing story this morning. bp is reportedly close to reaching a settlement with the government over the 2010 gulf oil spill. "the wall street journal" says the deal could top $20 billion. some oil is still surfacing. meanwhile, get ready to pay more to heat your home. the government predicts that heating oil customers will pay 20% more this winter compared to last year, largely because colder weather is expected. natural gas bills are expected to rise 15%. propane, 13%. this morning, kellogg is recalling nearly 3 million packages of bite-sized frosted and unfrosted mini-wheats because they may be contaminated be pieces of metal. the sell-by dates are between april and september. logon to goodmorningamerica.com on yahoo! for more details here. and some tense moments at the annual hot air balloon fiesta in new mexico. winds picked up. guess what happens then? you see the result.

and with 26 days to go, it's time for the next big debate. the v.p. candidates square off tonight. high stakes and high pressure, as new polls show mitt romney closing the gap in some key states. it's "your voice, your vote." and jonathan karl at the debate site in kentucky, where biden and ryan will square off. good morning, jon. >> reporter: good morning, george. tonight, right down on that stage, is the one and only showdown between vice president biden and paul ryan. and with the way the first presidential debate has transformed this race, the stakes are as high as they have ever been for a vice presidential debate. paul ryan may not have as much experience as joe biden, but he's done at least eight debates in previous congressional races, including this one, when he first ran for office and was just 27 years old. his opponent said he was young enough to be her son. ryan has never had a debate on a stage anywhere near as big as the one tonight. but two years ago, he did have a memorable faceoff against president obama at a bipartisan health care summit at the white house. >> i've got to tell you, the american people are engaged.

and if you think they want a government takeover of health care, i would respectfully submit you're not listening to them. >> reporter: ryan spent a lot of time preparing for this, including numerous debate sessions. >> i like joe personally quite a bit. i just disagree with his policies. >> reporter: campaigning in ohio on wednesday, mitt romney said he's confident that ryan will have a strong performance. >> i think paul ryan will do great. thank you. >> reporter: in an exclusive interview with diane sawyer, the president talked about what he expects from joe biden. >> what's your message to joe biden about tomorrow night? >> well, i think -- you know, i think joe just needs to be joe. >> reporter: biden scored points in his last debate four years ago, in what turned out to be the most-watched vice presidential debate in history. >> the notion that somehow because i'm a man, i don't know what it's like to raise two kids alone. i don't know what it's like to have a child you're not sure is going -- is going to make it. i understand. i understand. >> emotional moment four years ago, jon. the audience could top that

audience tonight. and it's coming as we're getting new, solid polls from the key battleground states of virginia, florida, and ohio. >> reporter: yeah. this is the key thing. we've seen, in national polls, romney has gained on the president in some cases. actually moved ahead of the president. now what we're seeing is that romney is gaining in the key battleground states, where the race really matters. he's gained, put it to virtually a tie, in florida and virginia. he had been behind in both states. and even in ohio, the president still has a lead there. but in polls this morning, romney is gaining. >> the president has about a six-point lead in ohio this morning. jon karl, thanks very much. and diane sawyer and i will have live coverage of the vice presidential debate at 9:00, 6:00 pacific. and we're proud that the moderator will be our friend and colleague, abc senior foreign affairs reporter martha raddatz. >> looking forward to that, george. now, to the bombshell report in the doping case against lance armstrong. nearly all of his own teammates

testifying against him. saying, he not only took drugs himself, but helped them dope, as well. abc's neal karlinsky has the story. >> reporter: rare home video, a revealing look inside lance armstrong's team at the 1999 tour de france. >> smile. >> reporter: this morning, many of the same loyal teammates who carried armstrong to seven tour de france victories, are burying him under an avalanche of testimony that he cheated to win. the massive u.s. anti-doping agency case file includes financial transactions. more than $1 million, paid by armstrong to the controversial italian doctor, dr. ferrari. who teammates say masterminded the doping program. and sworn affidavits from 26 people, including nearly a dozen former teammates. >> the stories are sad and they're chilling. but they're overly powerful. >> reporter: the agency says even armstrong's ex-wife, kristen, was in on the drug use, which she called, a necessary evil.

george hincapie, armstrong's close es friend and teammate through every tour victory, testified he was aware that armstrong used blood transfusions. that armstrong used testosterone throughout the time they were teammates. even that he once swept armstrong's apartment for drugs. and that he warned him about drug testing agents when they showed up. and hincapie, like the others, admitted his own doping as part of his testimony. but like armstrong, never tested positive. >> to deny the reality of lance's doping after reading this report would be like denying gravity. >> reporter: officials say armstrong tried to maintain a cover-up. telling hincapie to stay in europe to avoid testifying. and asking others to sign affidavits in an attempt to procure false testimony. >> as he said before, when he decided he had had enough of this kangaroo court, enough is enough. and i don't anticipate him doing anything to try to contest this one-sided report. >> reporter: according to sworn affidavits, drugs were such a big part of lance armstrong's

life, his ex-wife told people they had a code name for the blood-boosting drug epo. they called it butter, because they kept it in with the butter in their refrigerator at home. george? >> wow. okay, neal. thanks very much. we're going to turn, now, to that fantastic news about our friend, robin. she reached a major milestone yesterday on her road to recovery, homecoming. with friends and family by her side. >> 30 days ago, i walked through these doors. and i'm going home. i'm going home. >> reporter: wednesday was celebration day. ♪ amen you feel it now ♪ amen >> reporter: grateful for the outstanding care she's received, robin thanked the nurses and doctors. >> you're rock stars. >> reporter: and in classic robin style, added that as much as she loved them, she's not eager to return any time soon. >> don't take it the wrong way. i hope i never see you again. except an anniversary party.

where exactly she is in the journey right now. >> these moments are fantastic. the video is wonderful to watch. and she's batted this part out of the park. she got through the initial phase beautifully. did not have any terrible complications, which is wonderful. that's not to say there weren't hard days. there were very hard days. there was a lot of unpleasantness. and i think this is fantastic, as a first step, get out the door. and she got out the door. but we're not done yet. there's a lot more to come. and that 20-day-old immune system needs to kick in. the next 80 days, and that first 100, is very important after transplant. it's for the immune system to take hold. and for her to regain her strength. she's got to get her hair back. she has to get her strength back. she's got to rebuild in every sense. she's got to start eating normally, building up physical strength again, having physical therapy, go out there. but most importantly, the bugs of the world are the terrorists. and we are still on red alert. and that's something that goes on.

john muller has the latest on the twist in the story. >> reporter: as drunk as she was, four-times the legal limit, it's hard to understand thaw zoey ripple could walk into a strange home in the middle of the night, stand in front of a frightened couple holding a gun screaming, get out and walking towards them. now, she claims she might have been drug. it was a shot in the dark. >> we shot her. >> reporter: that went straight for this unlikely home intruder. >> she's awake. she's fine. but she's shot. >> reporter: 21-year-old zoey ripple was intoxicated when she wandered into this boulder, colorado, home last spring. startling timothy justice and his wife, doreen, at 3:30 in the morning. after repeatedly yelling at ripple to leave, justice took aim, shooting her in the hip. >> why would you just walk into a house when we're screaming for you to get out? >> reporter: and now, the student is speaking out for the

first time. >> this is a traumatic incident. and i'm deeply sorry that it has been for the justices, as well. >> reporter: on wednesday, ripple pleaded guilty to first-degree criminal trespassing. her attorney claiming she may have been under the influence of a date rape drug at the time of the incident. >> her statements to the police officer were pretty clear. and yet, she has no recollection of it at all. and that fits in with a date-rape drug. >> reporter: ripple was not tested for drugs that night. she has no idea how she made it into this home. her lawyer believes someone took her there. >> scary things can happen. and it's so important to keep, you know, your bearings about you. >> reporter: the judge gave ripple a deferred sentence, meaning the charge could be wiped from her record if she stays out of trouble for 18 months and completely away from alcohol. the homeowners were not charged. >> i continue to remind myself that this doesn't define me.

i know who i am. >> reporter: no one will probably ever know how ripple wound up at that home. it was far from where she was partying. and police in boulder say drunk college kids wander into homes 12 to 15 times a year. isn't that crazy? >> 12 to 15 times a year? >> drinking and walking can be dangerous. >> it can be dangerous. if someone has a gun, walk the other way. >> john, thanks very much. now, to new details in the wedding brawl caught on tape in philadelphia. the groom's brother charged with assault for allegedly striking a police officer. he's out on bail and claims he has nothing to do with starting the fight. linsey davis joins us with the latest. >> reporter: good morning, amy. until now, the only account of what happened inside was what was caught on tape. but new insight from the groom's brother, about his involvement in that 20-minute brawl that sent him to jail, and left his

new sister-in-law, dead. the first account on how two wedding nights ended in chaos. this morning, 20-year-old matthew sofka is speaking out through his lawyer. that's sofka, the brother of the groom, and the son of a former police officer, hit with a police baton and ultimately caved before being arrested and thrown into jail. according to his lawyer, sofka has just returned from his brother's wedding reception. he and his family got to the hotel, they say the melee involving guests from a separate wedding was already under way. >> he was trying to help his girlfriend when he was approached by the police from behind. he was unaware of who was behind him. he extended his arm. >> reporter: sofka, seen here leaving jail earlier this week, was struck by one office and put into a choke hold by another. >> other members of the police

department continued to try to subdue him. and ultimately, he was tased, i believe, a couple of times. >> reporter: according to this complaint, police say the force was justified because sofka, knowingly, intentionally or recklessly caused or attempted to cause bodily injury to a police sergeant. it goes on to say sofka and approximately three others punched and kicked the sergeant in the head and body. sofka maintains the fight has nothing to do with the sofka wedding party. >> reporter: we understand that additional arrests are being considered. sofka has been charged with aggravated assault, resisting arrest, and creating a riot. he could face five to ten years in jail. >> thanks so much. for more, let's bring in dan abrams. one of sofka's lawyers' main points was the brawl had started by the time he got there. how relevant is that to the

charges he's facing? >> it's somewhat relevant. but you're still guilty if you escalated the fight. the question isn't sort of who started it. the question is, what did he do? did he punch? and remember, his defense is now saying, this wasn't self-defense. they're saying he was purely a victim. his girlfriend is down on the ground. he, quote, extends his arm. and a police officer comes from behind him. and the next thing he knows, he's getting tased and hit with batons and, et cetera. his lawyer is portraying him as a victim here. >> how does the defense combat the police officer's words against his client's words? >> it's tough for the defendant. the videotape is going to be very important. in cases where there's a videotape, you start seeing the analysis go frame-by-frame. every movement that occurred on the videotape, if it ultimately goes to trial, becomes

>> reporter: was it always? really? >> yes. >> i went on vacation one time. and i came home and there was a for sale sign on my house. he had listed my house with century 21 when i was away. >> wasn't going to take the first offer. >> reporter: was this the best thing that happened in your careers? >> it was one of the most extraordinary thing that happened in our careers. >> absolutely. >> it was a show that changed television in a lot of ways. and to be part of something like that was certainly extraordinary. >> in order for me to be a good doctor, i have to separate my feelings from myself. >> reporter: mark, what did you learn from your acting on this show, that you draw upon now? >> all of a sudden, we all have better words to say. teachers in every direction. i was real thankful to be included in this group. >> people on the streets, would they come up to you and ask you medical advice? >> i opened a hospital in the midwest because i was a nurse on television. >> i would find i would be dispensing advice all of the time. and i wasn't far off. >> reporter: william daniels played the surlily dr. craig.

and we actually called her. and we said, hi, this is josh elliott and sam champion from "good morning america." and -- i don't want you to think we're weird. >> i do want to tell you, i did go through your wallet. but the oddest thing was, there was this picture, martha, that really was astounding to me. that you leave that in your wallet. we love it. we thought we'd give you this so it would take up less room. here's a picture of the two of us. and we did pay for the thai food with the cash in your wallet. >> but it was delicious. are you happy? >> i'm very happy. and i believe in good samaritans. and new york is great. >> and i told her, i said to sam, she'll wait a day because she's going to get the wallet back. thank you, martha. >> you couldn't have just staged this? >> no. >> sorry. >> i will say this.

>> they grow up so fast. when you're working really hard for a living, you really have to pinch your pennies. you want something with style. but something that's easy to wash. >> i'm totally different with the girls than it is for boys. >> and it's a problem. >> what do you think about alcohol being served as like little kids' parties? >> i probably would prefer not. the kids could drink it by accident. >> do you have a facebook page? >> i do. >> she has a facebook page. all of her messages and friend requests some to my account. >> i don't do any of it. i'm leery about that kind of stuff. you know? in moderation. i think it's fine. >> what ages are your kids? fi. fixing to be 8. just turned 6. and 19 months. >> bless you. wow. you're my new hero.

>> here professionals here. we're going to do this when we're being pelted with guitar picks here. they can't wait to get the party started. we heard about what other moms think about their kids and hot topics. we have daughters the same age, actually. 9 and 6. >> same age. how do you handle sodas and sugary drinks? >> i hate them. my kids are always begging me because they go to parties or go to my mother-in-law's. hello. >> my mom loves to give them sugary drinks. >> she's like, mom, i had coke. and you're like -- i get on the phone with my mother-in-law. and it's hard to avoid, when they go to a baseball game or something. but there's none in our refrigerator. >> i'm in the same boat as you. >> and my husband will sneak one. and he has to put it separate. >> what about facebook? that's another tough one. >> i think it's really tough. i don't have a facebook. obviously, none of my kids do. my 6-year-old has facebook. >> some 6-year-olds do, though.

>> it's crazy because the access. i'm not worried about them. i'm worried about everybody else. i'm worried about the security. i'm worried about the access they have, the bullying that happens on facebook. the bullying that happens on the internet. what's inappropriate. i mean, you know, i can't be where the kids stare at them all the time. >> some of the answers that the moms on the street gave you surprise you? >> not really. i think there is a need and desire for us as moms to keep our children as innocent as we can. and we're trying. especially in this era. we're trying to balance with all of technology. but i think it was endearing, you know, the alcoholic parties. i think every party i go to, if it's past 5:00. functions. by the time it gets there, you're jonesing for the wine. it's like, i understand them being there. but it's a hard one. if you have a drive, forget it. >> it's funny. speaking of the parenting issues, one of my favorite shows

right now is "the middle." we see them with these issues. you're making a guest appearance. tell me about your rough-and-tumble character. >> i'm her neighbor. i'm a beer-drinking -- i'm not the epitome of a quality mom. my little kid's in cowboy boots and a diaper. and i drink beer and smoke cigarettes. and it's the antithesis of what i believe in. exactly, of course. >> we want to put you on the hot seat a little bit and ask you fun questions. you started so young. what do you like better? stage or screen, brooke? >> i'm going to say stage. >> i love the stage, too. best vacation destination? snow or sand? >> sand. you said that with such longing. what do you do more? texting or calling? >> calling, actually. >> all right. tell us about your girls. girly girls or tomboys? >> one's a girlie girl.
